Following The Who's raucous early morning set, Jefferson Airplane
took to the stage on Sunday morning, August 17, from 7:00–8:45 AM.
Promising that the crowd will experience some “morning maniac music,”
Grace Slick introduced “the regular guys and Nicky Hopkins,” the
distinguished session pianist accompanying The Airplane at this gig.
For the ninth song of their set, they played the title song of their
fifth studio album "Volunteers". The album would not be released
until November 1969, but the Airplane was playing some of the
songs in their live shows that summer, including at Woodstock.
The Woodstock recording of “Volunteers” was first released in 1970
on Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More, a 3-LP
live album containing a sampling of one or two songs by
most of the acts who performed.
