"Sutter's Mill" is a song written by John Dawson and recorded by American
country rock band New Riders of the Purple Sage for their 1972 album
Gypsy Cowboy. The group emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in
San Francisco in 1969.
Sutter's Mill was a water-powered sawmill on the bank of the South
Fork American River in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in California.
It was named after it's owner John Sutter. A worker constructing the mill,
James W. Marshall, found gold there in 1848. This discovery set off the
California gold rush (1848–1855), a major event in the history of the US.
Gypsy Cowboy is the third studio album by New Riders of the Purple Sage.
It was recorded and released in December 1972 and peaked at #85 on
the Billboard 200 Albums chart in January 1973.
